Apprenticeship Scheme

If you are 16+ and have a knack for developing a career in construction as a scaffolder, the Apprenticeship scheme is the perfect opportunity for you!  During the two-year scheme, you will earn while learning and gain valuable industry experience, along with attaining your nationally recognised QQI Level 5 Certificate in Scaffolding.

Why PHD’s Apprenticeship Scheme?

PHD’s Apprenticeship Scheme is part of the larger National Scaffolding Apprenticeship. This scheme has been developed by the National Association of Scaffolding and Access Contractors (NASAC), the SIPTU Trade Union, the Health & Safety Authority (HSA), Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) and the Construction Industry Federation (CIF).

The scheme was launched in 2021 and the first batch’s graduation ceremony was held in May 2024.

Programme Structure

This practical programme has eight modules, developed in consultation with industry experts.

As part of this programme, Apprentices will engage in on-the-job training with PHD on one of our many project sites. Off-the-job training will take place in The National Construction Training Campus, Mount Lucas.

  • Developing the Scaffolder (Personal and Professional)
  • Industry Skills for Scaffolders
  • Scaffolding Erection and Dismantling

Year 2


  • Scaffolding Compliance
  • Management and Control of Scaffolding
  • Complex Structures
  • Capstone

Additional Training


  • Abrasive Wheels
  • Mobile Elevated Work Platforms
  • Mobile Access Tower
  • Harness Inspection

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have evidence of CEFRL level B2 minimum if English is not a first language
  • Hold a current, valid Safe Pass registration card

Non-EU residents will be subject to a Stamp 4 Working Visa.

Personal Qualities

The ideal candidate is:

  • Happy to undertake physically demanding work
  • Happy to work outdoors in the elements i.e. winter and summer
  • Enthusiastic for the job and sees scaffolding as a career path
