Restoration
The conservation of the Kells Round Tower, a key symbol of Ireland’s medieval history, was initiated by the Office of Public Works (OPW) and the Heritage Register to preserve its integrity.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project, the oldest undertaken by PHD Access, involved providing a bespoke scaffolding solution to support conservation work. Our extensive experience in heritage projects, including HMS Victory and Elizabeth Tower, made us a trusted partner in safeguarding historical structures.

ENSURING SAFETY AND ACCESS IN HERITAGE CONSERVATION
PHD Access’s scaffolding around the tower allowed OPW’s stone masons to safely access the upper levels and windows, crucial for the tower’s surveillance function. Key benefits of the scaffold included:
- Stability and Safety: Ensured the safety of both the structure and workers.
- Accessibility: Provided access to critical features like the upper windows.
- Non-Invasive: Protected the tower’s structure by avoiding physical intrusion.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION
One of our directors, Jane, has familial ties to Kells, with her mother hailing from the area. This personal connection added pride and significance to our involvement in conserving such a historically important landmark.
CONCLUSION
The Kells Round Tower conservation project highlights the successful collaboration between heritage organisations and expert contractors. PHD Access’s scaffolding enabled safe and effective restoration work, preserving this iconic piece of Irish history for future generations.
